Sheffield-based outfit Since Torino draw sonic inspiration from folk-rock, midwest emo, shoegaze and alt-country influences - their songs are laid back, melancholic and lethargic. They’re content meandering over literary influences and narrative song structures, with blasts of guitar feedback, mournful harmonica, slide guitar, and orchestral elements such as violin and trumpet drifting in and out to break up the wistful tension they conjure up.
After several months of self-recording in a lofty, terraced attic, Since Torino have now finished their debut EP, a long night down to calgary, a loosely conceptual collection of six songs-as-vignettes, capturing distinct stories and moments in time. This release pushes the boundaries of their alt-country sound, blending new soundscapes and sonic experimentation while deepening their already distinctive narrative lyricism.
Weaving between themes of aimlessness, nostalgia, and self-reflection, a long night down to calgary explores emotional landscapes with a candid, introspective edge, providing snapshots of the struggles and musings of grappling with identity, direction, and the passage of time.
The quartet, consisting of Ben, Luke, Regan and Alex, came together through a serendipitous mix of online and mutual connections. Ben and Luke met online whilst Luke was living in the Netherlands back in 2019, and upon his return to the UK they started to weave together the early threads of the band.
A few years of beer-soaked bedroom writing sessions allowed them to start to craft the voice the songs speak through, and through various projects they began to cut their teeth in Sheffield’s music scene. They eventually found a kindred spirit in Regan through a mutual friend, with Alex completing the lineup in April 2023 and marking the band’s official conception.
Their debut single, snow, released in November 2023, received high praise from Local Sound Focus, Tits Upon Tyne, and Rave Reviews. They also caught the attention of BBC Radio Sheffield and The Yellow Button, performing at notable Sheffield venues alongside HONEYMOAN and Pillow Fort. This was followed up with everything else, released in January 2024, blending emo and country into a melancholy folk-rock waltz about stagnation, earning recognition from The Alternative, Noizze, and Harvard Radio Broadcasting, culminating in a packed headline show in Sheffield.
